he Iittala company is said to have been founded in the year of 1881 in Finland, according to research when a glass factory was founded by a Swedish man named Petrus Mugnus Abrahamsson. But the name Iittala took many years to come into existence. Based on information acquired the company had to bring in people from Sweden at the start because there was said to be a lack of skilled glassblowers in Finland to make up the workforce.
The company did well and in 1917 it was brought by timber refinery company A. Ahlstrom who also owned the Karhula glass factory according to information obtained.
These two companies combined to become the Karhula-Iittala glass factory until the
1950's. The factory specialized in making bottles for chemists in the beginning.
Production stopped it is said for a while at the company and then restarted in the year of 1946. This continued based on research acquired up until the mid-1970's.
Then in the year of 1987 A. Ahlstrom sold Iittala to the Wartsila Company. Iittala
combined with the Nuutujarvi glass factory to then become the Iittala-Nuutujarvi
Company based on research. This company was then bought by The Hackman Company
in 1990. In the year of 2003 the company finally became known as Iittala and in 2004 they came under the ownership according to research information of ABN AMRO Capital. Since the year of 2007 Iittala has been 97% owned by Fiskars, with it is said, 3% of the shares being held by operational management.
